A guide to understanding the impacts of AI on coding & learning how to learn in 2026
A common question that comes up in almost every conversation I have with builders entering the computer science field: How important is it to learn to code in 2026, when tools like Cursor, Codex, Claude Code, and others can generate large amounts of code for you?
We’ve reached a point where writing code is often the easiest part of the workflow. The harder work is deciding what to build, specifying it clearly, reviewing what the agent produces, catching flawed assumptions, and knowing whether the system is actually ready to ship.
In this video, I break down 5 trends changing how coding works and what you should focus on learning in 2026 and beyond.
In essence, I think the old way of learning to code, then specializing deeply in frontend or backend development etc., is fading. The newer skill is to pick up foundations and then learn how to judge whether the code is good, understand the architecture and logic behind it, write the right specs, and stay closely involved in the building process without manually handling every line of code.
